Thursdays 4:30-6 pm beginning January 22

Join St. Columba’s Inverness Council for Ecological Discipleship for a rich, contemplative exploration of this timely book. Guided by CED member Penny Washbourn, we will gather to reflect on what it means for a river to be alive—and what it means for us to live in right relationship with the waters that sustain all life.

From the bestselling nature writer Robert Macfarlane comes Is a River Alive?—a luminous, mind-opening journey into the ancient and urgent idea that rivers are not just waterways but living beings with whom we share relationship, responsibility, and fate. With the lyricism and insight that have made him “the great nature writer of this generation,” Macfarlane invites us to encounter rivers not as resources to be managed, but as kin to be honored.

In this work of travel writing, natural history, and cultural insight, Macfarlane traces three remarkable river journeys: through Ecuador’s cloud forests, India’s wounded creeks and lagoons, and the wild, dam-threatened waters of Canada. Woven through these global stories is the intimate portrait of the fragile chalk stream near his own home, a river whose rhythms and vulnerabilities mirror our own.

Come ready to listen, wonder, and imagine anew how the living waters of the world are calling us into deeper connection, care, and ecological discipleship.

Please join us for the book study of Robert Macfarlane’s book Is a River Alive?, facilitated by Penny Washbourn, CED member. Discussions will be held on Zoom from 4:30-6:00 PM PT on Thursdays, January 22, February 5 & 19.

Online Course Event Details The Anti-Racism Commission (ARC) of the Diocese of New Jersey addresses the sin of racism. We provide transformative education that builds awareness and opportunities for open conversation. We serve all members of the diocese and seekers of racial justice. We are truth tellers and change agents.

ARC sheds light on racism through a six-week course that builds awareness and understanding of how racismhides in systems that affect our everyday lives: systems like health, education, religion, government, justice, real estate, finance, news media, and, in fact, almost all systems and institutions. Together, they covertly reinforce false ideologies that deny and justify racial and ethnic inequities.

We invite you to register for Anti-Racism Training so that you can learn the truth about racism in America andjoin the movement to dismantle it. The training will be held three times in 2026: Winter Session: Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on January 23, 30; February 6, 13, 20; March 20; Spring Session: Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 21, 28, May 5, 12, 19, June 16; Fall Session: Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on September 16, 23, 30, October 7, 14, November 11

Beginning Monday, February 9 and continuing monthly for 9 sessions

Presented by the Council for Ecological Discipleship, St. Columba’s Invernesswill be hosting a small online formation group beginning Monday, February 9 and continuing monthly for 9 sessions. Each session will meet from 4- 5.30 pm PT / 7-8:30 pm ET.

Love God, Love God’s World is a nine-session, film-based curriculum, ideal for those anywhere on the journey with creation care and environmental ministry—from newcomers looking to take their first step to seasoned leaders seeking a transformative small-group experience. Sessions include compelling films and readings, faith-based reflections, and discussion questions, each written by different contributors who draw from their own contexts and experiences. Participants will also discover ways to learn, pray, advocate, and conserve.

Participants will be asked to register in advance and plan to attend the majority of sessions in the course. No new registrations will be accepted once the group has begun to allow members to have a shared experience and build trust in one another over the months. Sessions will meet on: February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14, and October 12.

Reading materials and videos for each session take approximately 2-3 hrs to review. The commitment for the series is to be present as far as possible for the discussions in the group. These discussions will not be recorded and will not be shared outside the group to encourage open communication

The course materials require a password to access and can be accessed at any time. No books are required. Members of the Council for Ecological Discipleship will be facilitating different sessions. The course is free, though a donation is always welcome. Please feel free to invite your friends. You do not have to be an Episcopalian to participate, though there will be an emphasis on Scripture in each session, and we will open and close each session with prayer.
