RIP: The Very Rev. Anthony C. ‘Bud’ Thurston

The Very Rev. Anthony C. “Bud” Thurston passed away peacefully on August 14, 2024 at McLoughlin Place in Milwaukie, OR. Born on November 26, 1940, Bud was the eldest of seven children to Katherine Moxley (Belyou).

Bud attended Butler University where he met his future wife Christine (Olsen). He would later attend Yale/Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, CT and have his first child, Trevor. The young family would move to New York City and welcome a girl, Suzannah. Family was always important to Bud and he was very close to his grandmother Mary Belyou, who he lived with during the summers growing up.

Bud touched the lives of many people in parishes from the East coast to Midwest and, finally, at Trinity Cathedral in Portland, OR. From his time as a Page in the Michigan Legislature, Mississippi Summer in 1964, feeding/housing the homeless, countless baptisms and funerals, and insightful Sunday sermons he accomplished his mission to always try to help people.

Bud is preceded in death by his brother Richard of Lansing, MI. He is survived by his wife Christine of Milwaukie, OR, his children Trevor (Nicole and grandson Oly) of Sheboygan Falls, WI and Suzannah (Brett) of Molalla, OR, Siblings Phillip (Patty) of Phoenix, AZ, Roy (Lynda) of Fowler,MI, Jeanne Butler (Benjamin) of Harlingen, TX, Leigh (Robin) of Ypsilanti, MI and Carl of Harlingen, TX.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 18 at Trinity Cathedral 147 NW 19th Ave Portland, OR 97209
